Instagram ships changes almost every week, and most roundups stop at what users see. This page tracks every Instagram update since July 2026 and adds the question developers care about: can you use it through the Instagram API?
We update it every month. Each entry has the announcement date, who gets the feature, its status, and a source. If you publish to Instagram from your own product, the API column tells you which updates change nothing for your integration and which ones need your attention. For the publishing side itself, our Instagram posting API and social media publishing API pages explain how one request reaches Instagram and X.
One API instead of the Graph API plumbing. InvisibleAPI is one job-based API for Instagram and X. Connect the account, create a publishing job, poll it until it reaches published.

October 2026
Clickable links in posts and Reels with Meta One
Announced: with the Meta One business plans in September 2026, and promoted by Instagram for Business on October 13, 2026. Who: businesses and creators on the Meta One Advanced plan or higher. Status: launched.
For years the only clickable link on Instagram lived in the bio. Instagram now lets accounts add links to feed posts and Reels through Meta One business plans, starting with Advanced. Each plan includes everything in the plan below it:
| Plan | Links in posts and Reels | Other benefits named in the announcement |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | No links in posts or Reels | Verified badge, impersonation protection, more Meta Business Agent on WhatsApp |
| Advanced | 4 in posts plus 4 in Reels per month | Shared access for up to 4 people, competitive insights, an enhanced profile, advanced content scheduling |
| Expert | 8 in posts plus 8 in Reels per month | Shared access for up to 8 people, enhanced support with 5 cases per month and a dedicated case manager, optimized search |
| Max | 12 in posts plus 12 in Reels per month | Shared access for up to 30 people, unlimited priority support cases, personalized content strategy advice |
The monthly allowance resets on the renewal date, and unused links do not roll over. In the US, prices start at $14.99 per profile per month for Essential, $49.99 for Advanced, $149 for Expert and $499 for Max, and they vary by region. These business plans carry different names from the Plus, Core and Premium tiers Meta announced in September (see below).
API: no. The Instagram API has no field for a clickable post link, so a URL in a caption published through the API stays plain text. To send people somewhere from an automated post, point them to the link in your bio or add the link to a Story by hand.
Option to open Instagram on Reels (test)
Announced: October 5, 2026. Who: a test group. Status: testing.
Some users can now choose to open the app on Reels instead of the home feed. Stories stay at the top, and the regular feed is one swipe away.
API: no change. Publishing to Reels through the API works the same way: videos published through the Instagram API post as Reels.
Carousel editing in Edits
Announced: early October 2026. Who: Edits users on iOS, with Android to follow. Status: rolling out.
Instagram’s Edits app can now build carousels from photos and videos, with layouts, fonts, overlays, effects and custom stickers.
API: no. Edits is a creation app. Carousels published through the API are still assembled from child containers, up to 10 items each.
September 2026
AI assistant in Edits
Announced: September 30, 2026. Who: creators using Edits. Status: launched.
A chat assistant inside Edits uses an account’s own metrics to suggest ideas, hooks, captions and audio. Daily use is capped, with higher limits for Meta One subscribers.
API: no.
Boost button for Live videos
Announced: late September 2026. Who: creators and businesses. Status: rolling out.
A Boost button in the Live composer runs a broadcast as an ad in Feed, Stories and Reels while it is live.
API: no in-app equivalent. Ad promotion stays in Meta’s ads tools.
School Partnership Program expansion
Announced: September 29, 2026. Who: US middle and high schools. Status: launched.
Verified schools get broadcast channels, and verified students get Clubs and Teams and School Stories.
API: no.
Meta One subscription with Instagram Plus
Announced: September 15, 2026. Who: all users, opt-in and paid. Status: launched.
Meta One bundles paid features across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Meta AI. The Plus tier starts at $3.99 per month, with Core at $7.99 and Premium at $19.99.
API: no. Subscription features apply to the app, not to API access.
Add tagged posts to your grid
Announced: September 10, 2026. Who: all users, not yet in every region and not on desktop. Status: rolling out.
You can pin a post you were tagged in to your own profile grid. It shows with a tag icon, and the original post does not change. To plan a grid of your own, split one image into tiles with our Instagram grid maker, one of our free social media tools.
API: no.
August 2026
“AI-generated profile” label and reach limits
Announced: August 31, 2026. Who: all accounts. Status: launched.
A new “AI-generated profile” label replaces the earlier “AI creator” tag. Accounts that feature AI-generated people without disclosing it get reduced reach.
API: no new field. If your product publishes AI-generated content, the disclosure is set on the account, so plan for it in onboarding.
First Draft for Reels
Announced: August 25, 2026. Who: users, iPhone first. Status: rolling out.
First Draft trims clips and removes pauses to produce a first cut of a Reel in under 10 seconds.
API: no. The API publishes finished videos.
New Instagram wordmark
Announced: August 13, 2026. Status: launched.
Instagram introduced a redesigned text logo and brand system. If your product shows the Instagram name or logo, check its brand guidelines.
July 2026
Replace audio on published posts
Announced: July 21, 2026. Who: users. Status: rolling out.
You can now swap the music on feed posts and carousels after they are published, without losing likes, comments or reach.
API: no. Music is still chosen in the app.
AI Reels translations in five more languages
Announced: July 14, 2026. Who: public accounts where Meta AI is available. Status: launched.
Meta AI dubbing and lip-syncing for Reels now also covers French, German, Italian, Japanese and Korean.
API: no.
Parent alerts for teen conversations with Meta AI
Announced: July 2026. Who: parents using Instagram supervision in the US, UK, Australia and Canada. Status: rolling out.
Supervising parents get a notification if a teen raises suicide or self-harm in a conversation with Meta AI.
API: no.
Instagram API and developer changes
These are the changes that can break or change an Instagram integration. Meta ships them through Graph API versions, separate from app features. Our social media API changelog follows the same changes for Instagram and X.
| Date | Change | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Jul 29, 2026 | Graph API v26.0 released. The Instagram Explore feed ad placement is removed, and legacy parameters such as pretty and debug are gone |
Test your calls against v26.0 before you upgrade |
| Sep 24, 2026 | Graph API v20.0 removed | Move any calls still pinned to v20.0 |
| Oct 27, 2026 | Commerce Order Management API removed from all versions | Remove any Shops checkout code; there is no replacement |
| Jan 21, 2027 | Graph API v21.0 will be removed | Plan the upgrade now |
Publishing did not change. The limit is still 100 API-published posts per account in a rolling 24 hours, a carousel counts as one, and videos publish as Reels. Our Instagram API guide walks through the full publishing flow.
What these updates mean if you publish through the API
- Clickable post links are app only and paid. The new Meta One links cannot be added through the API, so keep a link in bio for automated posts.
- Most new features stay in the app. Audio replacement, tagged posts on the grid and Edits tools have no API equivalent, so automated posts cannot use them.
- Reels keep gaining weight. The open-on-Reels test is another sign that video matters. Every video you publish through the API already posts as a Reel.
- AI disclosure is now enforced. If your product posts AI-generated people, make sure account owners set the “AI-generated profile” label.
- Version upgrades are the real work. Pin your Graph API version and upgrade on your schedule, not Meta’s removal date.
If you publish to Instagram for your users, you can pass the version upgrades, token refresh and container polling to one API.
Post to X and Instagram from one API.
Connect the accounts once, create a publishing job, and poll it until it is published. Preflight validation catches a broken post before it reaches the platform, and a clientRequestId makes retries safe.
